Description: The Southland Conference, based in suburban north Dallas, and serving 10 member institutions in Texas and Louisiana is seeking applicants for the senior-level position of Senior Associate/Associate Commissioner for Brand Marketing & Communications.
Responsibilities: The selected applicant, under the direction of the Commissioner, shall be responsible for the overall management of the Conference’s communications, marketing, and digital media operations. This includes, but is not limited to:
Developing and implementing a visionary, creative and effective communications strategy across multiple platforms, and creating digital media opportunities that “tell the stories” of the Conference, its member institutions, and notably, the academic and athletic accomplishments of its student-athletes;
Implementing innovative methods to the Conference’s traditional and non-traditional media relations and statistical services, social media and video efforts, as well as publicity and promotional methods that grow and enhance the reputation of the Conference and its member institutions;
Serving as public relations lead for the Conference, and expertly writing, editing and managing content, including for the official website, www.southland.org, news releases, media guides and other printed material, electronic communications, television and radio, and social media sites;
Overseeing the Conference’s hands-on production of team content (video, photography, newsletters, infographics, etc.) and distributing to social channels, championship venues, conference members, television productions and other video promotional efforts, including ESPN Networks, other broadcast and production partners, and affiliated technology providers;
Actively identifying and creating opportunities to obtain media coverage for the Conference and its membership, scheduling interviews, preparing talking points for Commissioner, and generating coverage of other important issues;
Developing productive working relationships with national, regional and local media that enhances coverage of the Conference and its members;
Providing expert direction, training and support for the Conference’s external staff, and working collaboratively with and providing appropriate direction and assistance to institutional athletics personnel;
Maintaining and enhancing the Conference’s historical archives;
Producing and presenting reports concisely as requested by the Commissioner and the Conference membership;
Leading the local communications/media services effort within the Conference’s role as host for the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game;
Managing sport liaison and championship oversight responsibilities of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball,
Performing other duties as requested by the Commissioner.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in journalism, communications, public relations, or sports administration. Successful experience in staff management, working collaboratively in a team environment, and developing positive relationships is necessary. Extensive involvement with television productions, video streaming, social media platforms and other digital technology is necessary. Other requirements: a) knowledge of the media industry and understanding trends in media technology and coverage, b) strong organizational skills and multi-tasking in a deadline environment, c) excellent written and oral communication skills), d) proficiency in InDesign, PhotoShop, StatCrew/NCAA Genius Stats and other necessary software, e) staying current with emerging technologies related to sports communications/media services, and f) knowledge of NCAA and Conference rules and regulations. Extended working hours and Conference-related travel are also requirements.
