Job Summary: The Marketing Manager I is responsible for overseeing the marketing, public relations, event planning, fundraising, advertising and/or circulation responsibilities of a publication or program.
Additional Department Summary: The person in this job leads the marketing, social media, web site work, communications (including newsletters and press releases) as well as event management work for the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute (AEI). AEI is part of the Culverhouse College of Business but serves the entire University of Alabama. Thus, the person in this job will be working with all colleges on campus as well as alumni, local community members (City and Chamber) as well as state-wide incubators and accelerators. The individual also will be developing marketing programs that are designed to go out to the global UA alumni network that is interested in entrepreneurship, innovation, and corporate growth. The position includes new design work, support for sponsorship acquisition and fundraising as well as rolling out new programs and enhancing current programs. In addition, the individual in this role will take the lead on event management. AEI also manage the EDGE, which is Tuscaloosa’s incubator and accelerator as well as partnering to provide entrepreneurial services to the entrepreneurs in EDGE Labs. This is a key role reporting to the Executive Director, AEI.
In this role, the individual will interface with senior level executives including CEOs of both small and larger organizations, providing support to tenants and members of The EDGE as well as mentors, coaches, guest speakers, faculty and students working at The EDGE. This work includes ongoing communications, organizing events (speaker series, mentoring sessions, competitions, etc.). The individual will also be a key contact for the two advisory boards run by AEI (local EDGE advisory board and the BOV’s Entrepreneurship Advisory Committee).
The selected candidate will lead the development and ongoing delivery of correspondence, brochures, social media ads, websites, newsletter and more. Specific media campaigns and for events will be originated by this individual. The individual will also help the Executive Director with blog posts, working with faculty to showcase research, help organize, market, and manage webinars and other media outlets. The job holder will lead the WVUA weekly TV segment, helping to bring on guests, publicize the results and more. The job holder will help roll out several new initiatives including a small business management membership at The EDGE, crowdfunding campaign, new accelerator, and the Growth and Innovation Leaders Forum that includes support of an annual conference.
Additionally, this position will design and manage the publishing of marketing materials including PowerPoint presentations, flyers, posters, brochures, social media graphics, website graphics, etc. in accordance with UA guidelines.
The position holder will oversee student employees for additional support in departmental outreach efforts; this includes managing other employees and student interns.
The person in this role will also take the lead role in event planning/management including correspondence with attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and vendors; setting up and running a 3rd party event app; organizing a database of attendees/contestants; and executing event needs on the day of. Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends as needed to help with events. Project management skills are important for the person in this role to be successful. This individual will work closely with communications and event management teams in Culverhouse, Office for Research and Economic Development and the University Strategic Communications team (as needed).
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional marketing, public relations, communications, or advertising experience; OR Master's degree.
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communication. Design skills are essential; fluency with software packages such as Adobe In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop, Visme or related tools. Also need someone who can design templates and high-quality power point presentations as well as edit and manage web sites (knowledge of content management systems like WordPress). Experience with project management software also a plus (Asana or similar tool).
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Advertising and five (5) years of related experience; OR Master's degree Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Advertising and three (3) years related experience. Experience starting up and/or running a marketing department for an organization. We are looking for someone who shows he/she can startup a new department and grow it as AEI continues to grow.
