Carnegie Mellon is seeking a Senior Director of Media Relations to support the vision of the Vice President of University Communications and Marketing, the AVP for Communications, and university leadership in raising the visibility and enhancing the reputation of Carnegie Mellon University nationally and globally! The Senior Director will lead external media outreach and placement of university stories with a key focus on national and international outlets. In addition, the Senior Director will develop strategic planning; coordinate press pitches; create dynamic content and visuals; and monitor trends and best practices throughout the industry.
While raising standards and developing talent, the Senior Director will be an effective partner for external visibility efforts across and beyond the division, facilitating collaboration among communications professionals in the colleges/schools/units and those leading university-wide initiatives. The Senior Director will work with campus and regional partners to take advantage of national and global interest in CMU, including working with government relations, corporate and foundation relations to ensure coordinated outreach and messaging. By executing the highest standards for innovation and creativity, the Senior Director will develop best practices and media relations strategies that align with the university's strategic goals and those set forth by the university-wide communications and marketing plan.
The University Communications and Marketing Division (UCM) at Carnegie Mellon leads and coordinates strategic communications and marketing, raising the institution's global visibility, and deepening its reputation as one of the world's great universities. It tells the university's stories through its own rich array of tools and platforms; cultivates ambassadors among CMU's extended global community; and builds strong relationships with influential audiences through a variety of traditional and new tactics. It improves the CMU experience for faculty, staff, students, and alumni by facilitating clear communication within the university community.
Additionally, the division provides leadership, partnership, and coordination for communications and marketing staff across campus, collaborating with other offices, colleges, schools, and departments. It helps to articulate and highlight the distinctive excellence of CMU and its broad and deep impact on the human condition. With its world-leading strengths at the intersection of technology and humanity, CMU research, innovation, and creativity will help shape the 21st century.
Core Responsibilities will include:
In partnership with the AVP of Communications, enhance and elevate the university's reputation by developing and executing comprehensive external relations and communications strategies in coordination with broader university communications strategies and initiatives;
Work with UCM Communications teams (research, content, social, internal, executive) to identify storytelling and develop opportunities for media;
Lead the identification, development, pitching and placement of CMU stories on a national and global scale;
Collaborate with key partners across the university to generate news coverage for strategic focus areas, including the development of news packages and the cultivation of relationships with reporters, editors, and producers at targeted national and international media outlets;
Provide public relations counsel and direction to senior leadership, key faculty experts and campus communicators; foster best practices, including media training, across campus;
Develop an innovative and collaborative university-wide team environment that facilitates dynamic storytelling and timely, news-style turnaround time for deadlines;
Develop, write and edit content using impeccable writing skills and judgement; deploy best practices for writing and multimedia development to ensure content achieves maximum adoption by media outlets and target audiences
Education: Bachelor's degree; Marketing, Communication, Journalism, or relevant applicable
Experience: 10 + years of experience in media relations or, communications required
Experience working as key team member handling issues and crisis, including expertise developing messages and media statements, serving as media contact, etc. for an organization in higher-education, private sector or not-for-profit.
Demonstrated progressive leadership experience and public speaking experience in addition to a strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
On-air presentations experience, video shooting and editing as well as photography skills.
