Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Communications & Marketing is a critical component of the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. The incumbent will bring your leadership skills and extensive knowledge of best practices for communications and marketing in a health sciences environment to drive the college forward toward its next phase of growth. The role will partner with communications professionals across the larger university to ensure the college brand is consistent with the university brand while maintaining its unique identity, mission and vision.
This position is key in strategic planning and implementation of communications, media relations, marketing, advertising, branding and events for the college across its locations throughout the state of Washington. Additionally, the Director of Communications and Marketing provides oversight to staff engaged in executing the above.
The position is directly involved with the following functions:
Design and operationalize brand management of the college in coordination with university standards;
Provide creative direction of the college's printed and electronic communication in support of fundraising, recruitment/admissions, graduate medical education, all degree programs, research and other college objectives;
Develop and implement the college's internal and external communication strategies; and
Work collaboratively with the Dean, Vice Deans, Senior Development Director, Recruitment and Admissions and other appropriate internal/external partners to produce communication and marketing tools.
Serve as a media contact and provide external communication as needed on behalf of the Dean.
50% Communication and Marketing Strategies
Develop and implement comprehensive yearly marketing and communication plans, as well as campaign-specific plans as needed.
In collaboration with the development team, develop and implement strategic messaging and marketing strategies for development initiatives and other fundraising efforts of the college.
Develop and implement messaging and communications/marketing plans and strategies for admissions/recruitment, new degree programs, clinical campuses, research, Nutrition & Exercise Physiology (NEP) and Speech & Hearing Sciences (SHS) departments, Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education programs (GME/CME), and other offices and units as needed.
Lead and oversee the creative direction for all printed, electronic, broadcast and social media communication for the College of Medicine.
Oversee and review all College of Medicine publications. In collaboration with team members conceptualize, outline, edit and direct themes and visual cues for communications material, including major publications, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, programs invitations, website content and presentations.
Monitor the effectiveness of marketing and communication strategies; change tactics as necessary.
Build and maintain relationships with media, including (but not limited to) local media in Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver/Portland metropolitan areas.
Develop and manage crisis communications plan and ongoing training.
Manage Range Community Clinic branding, communications and marketing materials and activities.
20% Brand Identity Management
Manage College of Medicine brand standards, brand guide and brand adherence across all offices and departments.
Monitor trends and changes in brand identity and remain current.
Liaison with the Office of Marketing Communications to stay abreast of university and industry standards.
Manage assigned staff and lead team members engaged in communication projects and marketing.
Establish and lead project management for the team to ensure effective work flow and deadline management.
Support ongoing professional development and growth of team members.
Provide training. Assign work. Follow-up to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on schedule. Approve leave requests. Initiate corrective and/or disciplinary action as needed.
10% Fiscal Management
Compose and manage annual budget for marketing and communications.
Provide approvals and reviews for expenditures for marketing and communications.
Work with vendors to obtain quotes on outsourcing/support needs.
Perform other related work as required
Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment.
Advanced oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a communications or marketing plan.
Experience writing for a variety of media and styles, such as magazine feature stories, news releases, advertisements, and the web.
Strong computer skills including demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
Hold and maintain a valid driver's license.
Master's degree in a relevant field.
Communications, marketing and/or public relations experience in a health sciences university, healthcare delivery system or biomedical sciences research enterprise.
Experience in public relations, media relations, traditional media, and web.
Experience managing business social media accounts.
Experience using web content management systems.
Project management skills with the ability to plan and implement large projects, meet deadlines, and coordinate efforts by staff, peers, and members of the academic faculty.
Demonstrated success in working collaboratively and building professional relationships with colleagues and constituents from diverse backgrounds.
A willingness to work with teams in all areas of the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine mission.
