The Office of the Vice President for Research at Indiana University is responsible for research development, research compliance, and research administration. Working with university-wide offices, campus leaders, and deans, the Office of the Vice President for Research works to increase and diversify research and creative activities at IU, attract external funding for these activities, and develop public-private partnerships, technology transfer, graduate education, and intercampus research opportunities.
Specific Department Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director of Research Communications will increase internal and external visibility and awareness of IU Bloomington's research and creative activities by guiding and implementing research communication strategies and establishing relationships with key partners both internal and external to the university. This includes communicating key messages that raise the research profile at IU and goals of the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Bloomington campus. The Assistant Director of Research Communications also participates in managing relationships with all research division staff, as well as IU Studios, external media, and the general public.
Plans, creates and executes communication strategy and content to highlight the impact of IU research and creative activities, specifically work taking place on the IU Bloomington campus.
Assists the executive director of research communications with managing relationships with various internal and external partners.
Helps to determine communications needs, projects, and programs that align with objectives of the Vice President for Research Office.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes strategic and communication recommendations to the executive director.
With supervision and strategic input from the executive director, oversees and creates the development and production of web and digital content, press releases, videos, photography, and other communication products for and about research at IU.
Develop initial drafts of communication plans and campaigns and assist in facilitating execution.
Create and distribute bi-weekly Research Impact newsletter.
Post written stories and content to the Research Impact website and help track website analytics.
Work with senior associate director to create written scripts for the 3x-weekly Research Impact podcast.
Partner with IU Bloomington school and department communications staff, research centers, the Vice Provost for Research in Bloomington and IU Studios staff to help identify and coordinate production of written and visual content communications needs.
Strategize and execute communication strategy for IU Collections, which includes more than 220 collections of material objects entrusted to IU, such as those in the Lilly Library of Rare Books, the Eskenazi Museum of Art and the Kinsey Institute.
Strategize and implement media training for Bloomington faculty, with supervision and strategic input from the executive director.
Assist others on the VPR communications team with tasks such as editing, video feedback, etc.
Independently develops and executes basic and increasingly more complex strategic marketing plans for a department or functional area within a department to advance goals and objectives, including data collection and market research, target market definition, development of project timelines, sourcing of promotional materials, and marketing content creation.
Responds to inquiries and requests from stakeholders and explains information regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, including vendors, and acts as a collaborative resource in curating marketing plans to relevant initiatives, groups, events, and programs.
Regularly researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty, including information on various marketing channels (print, online, electronic, email, social media, and direct mail).
May participate in team-based marketing planning to align strategies and deadlines across various concurrent projects and initiatives.
Collaborates with users of various software programs and creative platforms to create and deliver content and marketing materials in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
May provide guidance to lower-level Marketing Generalists.
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, public relations, or a related field.
2 years of experience in a relevant field.
5 years of relevant experience in communications in an academic setting or a science/research media organization.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
